“Yet, in Black circles and with some politically progressive populations, President Obama is deemed “soft” and in colorful street terms, rather a “pussy” when it comes to asserting his power and authority in showing that one, he can lead with an iron fist, and two, and the reason for me writing this piece in the first place, to show that indeed he is a Black man. “_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The “Angry Black” President
Just the phrase sends shivers up my spine. The notion that the President of the United States should, in some way, show utter frustration during a Presidential Debate viewed by millions of people, both here in the United states and abroad, borders on absurdity. Now, don’t get me wrong. The situation of economic and party tribulations faced by President Barack Obama are historic and monumental, indeed. Party politics and obstructionist patterns and behaviors have plagued the Obama administration and his leadership since day one. But lets look at before day one in the call for Obama to become this “Angry Black President (man). Never before has a president been so scrutinized, so vetted and investigated then that of President Barack Obama.
From the time he emerged on the scene as a serious, viable contender for the Presidency of the United States charges were launched against him from the overtly, outspoken, critical radical “Birther” movement to the contrast political pundits, that Barack Obama was foreign and all but alien. Yes, an alien, super hero, above human, yet sub-human, political pop star. Those were the descriptors coming from the populous of Whites in America. While the notion of a Black Presidential candidate, and now Black President, assisted in cleansing or giving a sort of absolution to the race-guilt White population, the election of such a man as President Barack Obama is just what the country had hope for. After hundreds of years of enslavement of Black people in the United States, coupled that with the years of openly oppressive laws of Jim Crow, to the now silent racism, lack of economic progress in communities of color, Obama is just what White American should be opening celebrating. And, with some Whites they are celebrating. President Obama serves as just that “magic negro” pill that justifies and solves any questions to if the United States is truly the land of opportunity.
Now you may ask why is it important to some individuals that President Obama show that he is and can “act” like a Black man. That reasoning is because when all else fails, we including president Obama, are expected to regress to the primal – primal aggressive instincts, to become animistic, antagonistic, belligerent, non-negotiable, need I say monster.
The calls for such displays, or that Obama become the, “Angry Black President”, is the very contrast of what got President Obama in office in the first place. President Obama’s appeal to the voting populous was based in large part on the fact that he did not fit the stereotype of being this “Angry Black” man. He didn’t come with the racialized fire of an Al Sharpton, nor a Jesse Jackson, Sr. Obama wasn’t riding on the Black horse of vengeance and social discontent, leading slave revolts like the infamous Nat Turner. President Obama, as well as other Black men and Black women, have chosen to evolve beyond ascribed stereotypes from the White as well as their own Black cultural expectations.
It’s a choice. You get to choose who and what will bring you to that “Angry Black” moment. When you are charged with presiding as President of the United States of America, your actions must excel far more than just a knee-jerk, and negligent expression of aggression. For the best way to represent Black culture through leadership is to lead with a level head; a steady hand, a barometer on aggression, as to not fit nor fall, into the call for the “Angry Black” method of leadership displays. To call for such a display would mean that the majority of the population warrants and are ready for the “Angry Black” displays of discontentment. I for one, don’t think we want to see that in our first African-American Black President, nor are we ready for the Black man to release his force of discontentment, injustice and dehumanization built up through the years. President Obama, don’t become the “Angry Black” man that so many well intended misguided are asking you to become. Stay in your role as the diplomatic and cool-headed poised President of the United Sates of America that you are. This role in fact, represents Black culture and Black people much more than becoming the expected and all so easy, stereotypical “Angry Black” man.
